Hydraulics: A Hydraulic Press

About this workshop

What is pressure? How can motion be transmitted through a medium? How does force change when motion is transmitted in this way? We will explore the principles behind hydraulics and pneumatics.

What you will build

During the workshop, we will build a simple hydraulic press using syringes and tubes. We will demonstrate how it works by pressing different types of plastic objects and modelling clay.

What it covers

Air and water pressure, transmission of motion through a medium, and the amplification (or reduction) of force based on the difference in the surface areas subject to pressure.

What you need to know first

No previous STEM or science experience is required; curiosity and a willingness to build, experiment, and ask questions are all you need.
